I Read That Movie at the Library: SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS

2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library
Meeting Room A
This month our "page-to-screen" book club is reading Snow Falling on Cedars, the 1994 PEN/Faulkner Award-winning debut novel by David Guterson, who wrote the book over 10 years while working as a high school English teacher. The gripping, suspenseful story is set on a remote Washington state island in Puget Sound in the mid-1950s, where a Japanese American resident stands accused of murdering his childhood friend, a local fisherman. The trial is covered by the editor of the local newspaper, who reminisces about his youth and wartime experiences on the island, revealing how underlying jealousies and post-war anti-Japanese sentiment play a significant role in the murder trial.

Ask for a copy of the book at the Humanities Desk on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library. Read the book, then come for a screening of the 1999 film adaptation, starring Ethan Hawke as the newsman and great actors Richard Jenkins and Max von Sydow as prosecutor and defender, on November 16 at 2:00 p.m. in Meeting Room A, followed by a discussion about the book and the movie. Even if you haven't read the book, you are welcome to join us to watch the movie and participate in the conversation!
