Job Readiness Rotation

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
East Shelby Library
Meeting Rooms

During this rotation, attendees will have the opportunity to gain insight on what employers are looking for on a resume, as well as how to conduct themselves during an interview. Attendees will also get a chance to learn about the new app, Memphis Works.

Station One: Resume Corner

We will ask people to bring their resumes or at least a draft to participate in this part of the program. The instructor will do the following:

·         Give a brief overview of what is necessary and unnecessary to a resume

·         Go over formatting (bullet points instead of paragraphs, spacing, clear fonts, etc.)

·         Review their resumes, and suggest what needs fixing (perhaps send them into the library if they have time to fix them)

·        Q&A

Station Two: Interviewing

·         Instructor will cover the basics of a successful interview:

o   Good eye-contact
o   Good posture
o   Staying engaged throughout the interview process
o   Answering the questions completely – no diverting from the subject, no short or careless answers, etc.
o   Attire

·         Instructor will conduct a mock interview with 1-2 attendees (or more, if others want to be interviewed as well), while the others observe

  • ·         Instructor will let group know the positives and negatives of the mock interviews, and how to improve
  • ·         Instructor will cover what to do after interviews (how to know when it’s appropriate to follow-up or not)
  • ·         Q&A

Station 3: Memphis Works App

Instructor will give a brief tutorial of the app:

  • ·         How to download the app
  • ·         Create their account – make a profile, list skills and interests,
  • ·         What jobs are listed
  • ·         How to complete the survey that’ll make them first priority for the employers featured on the app
  • ·         How to customize their personal job search on the app
