Social Justice Book Club 4 Kids

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
East Shelby Library
Children's Area
Throughout history, young people have been inspired to stand up against tyranny and fight for their rights, their freedom, and for their very lives.  Rebellion such as this is the bedrock of democracy, and has ignited a fire of hope in us all.  Kids ages 9-12 are invited to join us after school for the Social Justice Book Club, where we will read and discuss tales of revolution, bravery in the face of peril, and standing up for what you believe.  We will also discuss human rights, current events as they relate to the books, and what kids can do to take part in a movement.  Inspired by MLK50, it is our hope that by participating in this club, kids will begin to see the bigger picture and take their first steps into becoming a citizen of the wider world.

Takes place the 4th Thursday of every month, January through April from 4-5 pm.

Love comics?  Like to draw?  Got a story gnawing away at your brain?  Then the East Shelby Comicker's Club is for you!  The Comicker's Club will meet weekly to learn all about how to write and draw comics, as well as partake in special projects and talk about our favorite comics, manga, and graphic novels.  And that's not all!  All throughout the 8 week Comicker's Club course, Ms. Paisley will guide you through the production of your first full comic, from concept to completion.  To cap it all off, our very special guest, Mr. Kazu Kibuishi (author and illustrator of the smash success Amulet graphic novel series) will be meeting with the Comicker's Club on March 24th to meet with participants, review your hard work, and tell you all about what it is like to make comics for a living!  Children ages 9-14 are welcome to come.  Art and writing supplies are provided.
